TOP 10 PRESENTATION TIPS TO LEARN FROM STEVE JOBS

Steve Jobs has something to teach all MBA students out there

Every new business pitch should do three things: inform, educate and entertain.

BusinessWeek.com columnist Carmine Gallo reveals the techniques that have turned Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, into one of the world’s corporate presenters. There are some helpful nuggets that will add punch to your next agency pitch.

Here is the ‘Readers Digest’ version of his 10 Ways to Sell Your Ideas the Steve Jobs Way:

  1. Plan your presentation with pen and paper. Begin by storyboarding your presentation. Steve Jobs spent his preparation time brainstorming, sketching and white-boarding before he creating his presentation. All of the elements of the story that he wants to tell are thought through, elements are planned and collected before any slides are created.

  2. Create a single sentence description for every service/idea. Concise enough to fit in a 140-character Twitter post. An example, for the introduction of the MacBook Air in January, 2008, Jobs said that is it simply, “The world’s thinnest notebook”.

  3. Create a villain that allows the audience to rally around the hero—you and your product/service. A ‘villain’ doesn’t necessarily have to be a direct competitor. It can be a problem in need of a solution.

  4. Focus on benefits. This is important for ad agencies to remember. Your audience only cares about how your service will benefit them so lead with benefits rather than agency credentials and capabilities.

  5. Stick to the rule of three for presentations. Almost every Jobs presentation was divided into three parts. You might have twenty points to make, but your audience is only capable of retaining three or four points in short-term memory. Give them too many points and they’ll forget everything you’ve said.

  6. Sell dreams, not your services. Steve Jobs didn’t sell computers. He was passionate about helping to create a better world. That was the promise that he sold. For example, when Jobs introduced the iPod in 2001, he said, “In our own small way we’re going to make the world a better place.” Where most people see the iPod as a music player, Jobs saw it as a tool to enrich people’s lives.

  7. Create visual slides. There were no bullet points in a Steve Jobs’ presentation. Instead he relied on photographs and images. When Steve Jobs unveiled the Macbook Air, Apple’s ultra-thin notebook computer, he showed a slide of the computer fitting inside a manila inter-office envelope. Keep your agency presentation’s that simple.

  8. Make numbers meaningful. Jobs always put large numbers into a context that was relevant to his audience. The bigger the number, the more important it is to find analogies or comparisons that make the data relevant to your audience.

  9. Use plain English. Jobs’s language was remarkably simple. He rarely, if ever, used the jargon that clouds most presentations—terms like ‘best of breed’ or ‘synergy’. His language was simple, clear and direct. So don’t use agency speak when presenting, “integration, proprietary process, etc.

  10. Practice, practice, practice. Steve Jobs spent hours rehearsing every facet of his presentation. Every slide was written like a piece of poetry, every presentation staged like a theatrical experience. Steve Jobs made a presentation look effortless but that polish came after hours and hours of arduous practice. Agencies often are forced to rely on spontaneity to provide creative energy for a pitch because they have spent all of their time on putting together the presentation and leave little or no time for rehearsal. Most unrehearsed pitches end up falling flat.

TRICK TO RESET OR REMOVE BIOS PASSWORD

Many people use BIOS password to lock up their computers, making them completely unusable without entering the correct password. This password has to be entered before loading the operating systems, normally on a DOS screen shortly after the computer started. BIOS password is usually stored together with other BIOS settings such as the time, date and size of the hard disk. These pieces of data are usually stored in a flash chip on the motherboard.

To reset or remove BIOS password, look for a jumper which usually can be found near the processor or BIOS battery on the motherboard. After locating the jumper (usually with a label - PSWD beside it), move the jumper from connected pins 1+2 to pins 2+3 for a few seconds or so, then move back to pins 1+2. This will reset the entire BIOS settings. The next time you boot your computer, the BIOS will show you the default factory settings and from there you can optionally set a new password.

  • Here are the Commands :

  • Type debug

  • Type o 70 2e

  • Type o 71 ff

  • Type q

By Putting this commands your Machine's Bios has been reset. Now restart your computer and everything should run just fine.

Another alternative way to completely reset your bios setting is to reinsert the CMOS battery which can be found on the motherboard. The CMOS battery provides power supply to the motherboard in order to hold the BIOS settings data.

SPEED UP YOUR WINDOWS 7

Windows 7’s context menus can become cluttered over time, filled with different options from the various programs you’ve installed. Worse yet, badly behaved context menu entries can add delays before the context menu appears, slowing you down and making you wait every time you right-click a file or folder.
What happens when you right-click a file on your Windows 7 system? Is there a significant delay before the context menu appears? (Go on, feel free to try it – we’ll wait.) If there is, you should remove some context menu entries to speed things up. Even if it pops up quickly, you might want to remove some context entries just to tidy things up.

CCleaner

One of the quickest, easiest ways to remove context menu entries is with CCleaner, a popular application we’ve covered in the past. The context-menu-editing feature was added to CCleaner fairly recently, so be sure you have the latest version of CCleaner or you may not have the feature. Launch CCleaner and click the Check for Updates link at the bottom of its window to check that you have the latest version.
In CCleaner, click the Tools icon in the sidebar, select Startup, and click the Context Menu tab at the top of the list. You’ll see a list of context menu items you can easily disable.

Some items in this list may have the same name as the context menu entry itself, while some are named after the program the context menu is associated with. For example, the “ANotepad++64” item in my list here corresponds to the Edit with Notepad++ context menu entry.

To disable a context menu entry, select it and click the Disable button. You probably shouldn’t use the Delete button – if you disable a context menu entry, you can easily re-enable it from here later. If you want a context menu entry back after deleting it, you may have to reinstall its associated application.

Changes you make here take effect immediately – you don’t have to restart your computer.
If your context menu is slow to appear when you right-click a file, try disabling each context menu entry here one at a time. After disabling one, right-click a file and see if your problem is solved – if it is, you’ve pinned down the problematic context menu entry and solved your problem.

ShellExView

CCleaner is great and easy-to-use, but you may have noticed that it doesn’t show all context menu entries. If you need to see them all, try ShellExView by NirSoft.

After downloading and launching ShellExView, it automatically scans your system for context menu entries and other shell extensions.

To view only context menu entries, click the Options menu, select Filter By Extension Type, and choose Context Menu.

The list shows both third-party context menu entries and built-in ones that come with Windows. Third-party context menu entries are highlighted in pink – they’re the ones you’ll want to disable. (You can also disable some of the built-in context menu entries, if you like.)

To disable a context menu entry, click it and click the red Disable button on the toolbar. The word “Yes” will appear in the Disabled column. If you want to re-enable it later, open ShellExView, select the disabled context menu entry, and click the green Enable button on the toolbar.

You’ll have to restart your computer for your changes here to take effect. It’s not as convenient as CCleaner’s tool, but you can manage many more context menu entries.

It’s also possible to remove context menu entries by editing your registry directly, but we don’t recommend this. Even for experienced users, this process is much more tedious and time-consuming (context menu entries are stored in five different places in the registry). It’s also not possible to easily disable a context menu entry, only delete them – so you’d have to back up each key before deleting it if you wanted to restore it later. Computers excel at automating tedious tasks, and this is one tedious task computers can handle for us.
If you’re still using Windows XP, you can actually remove some context menu entries without installing any other software – but this option is no longer present in Windows 7.

Did you catch any context menu entries slowing your computer down, or did you just tidy up a cluttered context menu?

Leave a comment and let us know, especially if you identify a misbehaving context menu entry that was slowing you down.
